Other training available to Scouters …

Round Table:
This is a monthly get-together of all Leaders, Assistants, Committee Members, and involved parents who want to help their Unit Committee get the best resources, activities and up to date information on upcoming events in the District and Council. Join a network of seasoned Scouters that have a wide resource of experience for the “new” leader. Round Table is offered monthly on the 1st Thursday of each month.

University of Scouting:
University of Scouting is a multitude of specialty sessions to help you gain new skills and abilities to become the very best Scout Leader possible. Experienced Scout Leaders from across the Council make up the staff. They are all volunteers, just like you, and they want to help you. There are courses for all types of Scout Leaders – Cub Scout College, Boy Scout College, and College of General Studies. This training is offered annually at various locations.

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation):
Leaders and parents interested in helping their Pack with planning and execution of Pack camping trips should attend this training. This training is offered through the Mustang District.

OWL/IOLS (Outdoor Webelos Leader Training – Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills):
This two-day, overnight training course is for anyone who will be working with Webelos Scouts. The training helps leaders become familiar with the Naturalist, Forester, Geologist, and Outdoorsman activity badges. Also covered is first aid, fire building, ropes and knots, tent selection, cooking and much more! This training is offered through the Mustang District. As of 2010, it was combined with IOLS to be a very thorough training session.

Safe Swim Defense:
Before a BSA group may engage in swimming activities of any kind, a minimum of one adult leader must complete Safe Swim Defense training, have a commitment card with them, and agree to use the eight defenses in this plan. This training is offered online.

Safety Afloat:
Safety Afloat has been developed to promote boating and boating safety and to set standards for safe unit activity afloat. Before a BSA group may engage in an excursion, expedition, or trip on the water (canoe, raft, sailboat, motorboat, rowboat, tube, or other craft), adult leaders for such activity must complete Safety Afloat Training, have a commitment card with them, and be dedicated to full compliance with all nine points of Safety Afloat. This training is offered online.

Wood Badge:
Wood Badge combines a leadership development program with the opportunity to sharpen personal outdoor/camping skills, open to all Scout Leaders who meet minimum requirements. The leadership skills one learns in Wood Badge are not only applicable to Scouting, but also to the growth of the individual and the roles in life they fill, professionally and at home. To the Scout Leader, Wood Badge often makes the difference between offering a mere form of entertainment — or providing a program which will have a profound influence on the lives of boys and girls. This training is offered through the Longhorn Council.
